THE DEPARTMENT OF CULTURES, POLITICS AND SOCIETY

The Department of  Cultures, Politics and Society (CPS) employs sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, experts in international relations, political theorists and philosophers, geographers, historians and linguists whose studies contribute to in-depth analysis of themes on the border of their disciplines.

As its primary goal, the CPS Department seeks to merge and federate research teams and individuals who study society in its various dimensions: historical, philosophical, political, sociological, anthropological, linguistic and geographical.

The Department offers cutting-edge undergraduate concentration for those interested in the social dimensions of politics, economics, history and anthropology.  Our Department members do research and teaching on important topics of concern in the “real world” (e.g. from politics and economic sociology to social networks, immigration and inequality).

The Department of Cultures, Politics and Society boasts an active research environment consisting of several research groups which work on local, national and international projects.

The head of Department is Franca RONCAROLO.

The Department of Cultures, Politics and Society actively encourages exciting and innovative collaborative approaches to interdisciplinary research. Anthropologists, Sociologists, Political Scientists, Experts in International Relations, Political Theorists and Philosophers, Geographers, Historians and Linguists work together to study the complex forms and processes of social and political phenomena, both from a contemporary and from a historical perspective.

More than a hundred researchers from various academic backgrounds and 13 Research Centers contribute to the development of innovative ways aiming to find solutions to topical issues, such as Development-related themes; the ongoing economic and social transformations and political realignments; the new cultural configurations at the local, national and international levels; the pervasive presence of Information Technology.

Both theoretical and applied research are developed within the Department thanks to the multiplicity of methods and paradigms characterizing the scientific fields represented.
Moreover, both monographic and comparative investigations are carried out, from a theoretical, historical and intercultural point of view.

The traditional missions of the University of Torino, focusing on teaching and research, have been extended to the so-called Third Mission, which has become a major policy concern in recent years. The Third Mission has assumed an increasingly crucial and strategic role in dealing with the territory and the society.

Third Mission in universities seeks to generate knowledge outside academic environments to the benefit of the social, cultural and economic development.

Departments carry out Third Mission activities and projects  to strengthen dialogue and interaction among University, industry and society.
